The problem is that the right to drive a car is not vested in Constitution (as far as I am concerned), which basically means that courts and legislators are afraid of restrict the right to hold a gun because they are afraid of being accused of violation of Constitution... and of course there are gun lobbistsAngry
In my country, the right to have a gun IS a privilege and you can be awarded by it only after passing rather strict medical, law and technical exams. Even then, most of people are only entitled to have their guns at home in a depository, unloaded and kept separate from the bullets. Furthermore, you can't buy bullets or guns in Wallmart... Maybe it is about culture.

Hi Lawyee,  You're right on with the constitutional point.  I was meandering because I thought we were being invited to.  Perhaps if they'd had cars in the 1780's they'd be in the Constitution too.

Re the fear of being overturned, sometimes laws are written for the express purpose of provoking an adverse ruling, i.e., challenging the constitutionality of some issue  -  sort of an "in your face" approach.

Although I am a gun owner, I'm not in a position to comment on the US Supreme Court Ruling or the Second Amendment, since I am not a US citizen. I would like to share, though, the situation on gun ownership in the Philippines.

At present, private citizens are allowed to own only one handgun and one shotgun/.22 rifle. You must present documents like psychiatric and police clearances . . . in theory, at least.

That said, I can personally attest that despite this, it is fairly easy to acquire a firearm through legal channels (and even easier to get one illegally, especially assault rtifles).

My country is a living example of the cliche '"If you outlaw guns, only outlaws have guns." Every campaign/election period there is a nationwide ban on the carrying of firearms by private citizens.  Yet this has not stopped political killings in the least.

Admittedly there are a few cases of legal gun owners commiting murder.

There is no perfect system. Even if the requirements were strictly adhered to, a few psychos would still fall through the cracks. So all I can do is make sure I am not one of the casualties.
