Clive,

In the last ten years Australia, England, and Canada have all increased the restrictions on owning firearms.  Over that time violent crime (i.e. rapes, murder, hot burgleries, etc.) have increased in all those countries while we have seen a decrease over that same period in America.  What has changed in the U.S. that could account for this?  States have made it easier to obtain weapons permits and concealed carry permits.  If you are interested in seeing the numbers on my ascertations as well as the refutation of "facts everyone knows are true about guns" check out this website.

Well guns can be used for honest purposes too. Take it from me that even if harsh laws were imposed on the population, that wouldn't stop people from being in possesion of firearms. The reason for that is people being afraid of potential crimes commited against them. What the governments should do is find a more efficient way of tracking down criminals. Then the proportion of people possessing guns will diminish rapidly. I'd hold up as an example some facts about the autonomious state called Lightenstein.(it's situated alongside France) It's population is less than a milion and crimes are almost unheard-of there. Therefore guns are rarity simply because people don't need them.

I believe you mean Liechtenstein a principality situated between Austria and Switzerland with a population of about 34,000.
