why do we use had been here??,is it right if we say (was) instead?!so if we can what is the difference ???

Morales, convicted of killing a seventeen-year-old girl twenty-five years ago, had been due to be executed by lethal injection on Monday night.

Grammatically, was can be used, but the past perfect had been places the event as previous to another past event-- in this case, the convict's reprieve, which is the main news item.

An excellent example of the appropriate use of the past perfect.

Hello,

In this context, “was scheduled” sounds more natural. For the proper use of “due”, there are few suggestions:

 

Due to unforeseen weather problem, his flight was cancelled at the last minute.

Your maintenance fee is due tomorrow.

We all pay our dues to be good at something.

He is due to arrive at 9:00 am.
