What kind of difference do you native speakers feel there is between 'I've been to the U.S' and 'I've been in the U.S'?

'To the US' is from outside looking in and maybe just a brief trip.

I've been to the US, France, Bulgaria, and Japan. I'm glad to be back in Swaziland where I belong.


"In the US" is from inside.

I've been in the US for seven years, working on my as yet incomplete novel.
