Do you agree that, in their obligative readings, "must" is generally subjective while "have to" is always subjective?

Hi,
If you read a sign that says 'Passengers must remain seated until the bus has stopped', in what sense would you consider that generally subjective?

Best wishes, Clive

Because it expresses the speaker's authority. The deontic source is the speaker.

Because it expresses the speaker's authority. The deontic source is the speaker.

But if  'subjective' is defined as 'expressing the speaker's authority', would you say that 'I have to do my homework tonight' is subjective?

In my variety that would be objective - i.e. external to the speaker. It would express either the authority of another or the constraint of circumstances. How about in your variety?

Hi,
Yes. So that would mean the answer to the original question is 'No', wouldn't it?

Sorry, very tired when posting thread post.

This is what i meant:

This is the frustration of not being allowed to edit one's posts.
