Hi, I desperately need your help.
"Hitherto, they have been crowded at the back of the stage; from time to time they have been heard 'off' ". I cannot figure out what they have been done.

'off' in this context means 'offstage', as in the play titled "Noises Off". In other words, when the audience hears a noise or a voice from an actor that comes from somewhere away from the main stage area, they have heard it "off".
