Hello File Leech, welcome to English Forums,

I would say that a syllable is a word or a part of a word that consists of one vowel or diphthong sound, with 0–5 consonant sounds on each side.

e.g.

help: 1 vowel sound Email [E] = 1 syllable

what's: 1 vowel sound Angel [A] = 1 syllable

a: 1 vowel sound Angel [A] = 1 syllable

syllable = 3 vowel sounds [y, a, e] = 3 syllables

Don't forget to ignore any silent vowels.

You can find out how many syllables there are by looking the word up in a dictionary. Each dictionary has its own method of showing syllables, which will be explained at the front. For instance, Merriam-Webster online puts dots between the syllables, like this:

syl·la·ble

Count the dots and add one, and you have the number of syllables.

Some people find it useful to think of the number of syllables in a word in terms of a music, more specifically, the minimum number of melody notes necessary to set the word to music.

Caution: This does not work for everyone. It may depend on the extent of your personal experience with music.

syllable

1
: a unit of spoken language that is next bigger than a speech sound and consists of one or more vowel sounds alone or of a syllabic consonant alone or of either with one or more consonant sounds preceding or following
2 : one or more letters (as syl, la, and ble) in a word (as syl·la·ble) usually set off from the rest of the word by a centered dot or a hyphen and roughly corresponding to the syllables of spoken language and treated as helps to pronunciation or as guides to placing hyphens at the end of a line
____________

minimal syllable - In linguistics this is the minimum structure of sound elements that produces a syllable for a given language.  In English the minimum syllable is a vowel.  An example is the word "a".

I'm not sure if that's what you mean by minimal syllable.

OK, The syllable is the consisting of a center which has little or no obstruction to the air flow, you shoul see phonetics and phonology from Peter Roach..
U can tell the number of syllables when u find obstruction to the air flow, example:
this is a minimum Sylable; are /a:/
you see , no obstruction.
now see this: cookie; /kuki/ you see KU and then an obstruction to say Ki ,, there are 2 syllables... don't worry I´m studying that too, but I'm from Colombia

Hello everyone,

You said that syllable division is necessary to (1) set the words to music and (2) to good pronunciation. By the latter do you mean to know which syllable should be stressed?

Many thanks,

Hela
