Drug Addiction in UAE
For the past three decades, the UAE has faced rapid changes in economic and social fields which helped spread many problems such as drug addiction. The statistics of Anti-Narcotics Department of the Ministry of Interior, published by Al Amn — the official magazine of Dubai Police, showed that, “More than 113 individuals were charged in 63 drug cases in the UAE in July 2004” (113 charged in 63 drug cases in July,2004). The statistics showed that 33 % of addicted people were UAE nationals, some of which were charged with drug use, others with drug peddling. Therefore, this serious problem needs to be solved as soon as possible for the good of the society. As a solution to this problem, I propose that our youth be presented with awareness lectures on the dangers of addictive drugs.
The causes and effects of this phenomenon are different from person to person. Family problems, pressures, and lack of involvement can lead some people to become addicted to drugs. Drugs cause people to feel that they are in a different world where they forget what is happening around them. The media is playing a big role in people's lives today. Many movies and television programs describe how to take drugs. Some movies show that drugs are a good thing allowing people to forget what is around them. All of which is wrong. According to “Proposals to Curb Drug Abuse(2004)”, research done by Aysha Ibrahim Al Buraimi of the Police Research Centre at the General Directorate of Sharjah Police, “ the majority of students answered the questionnaire on how they knew of drugs by saying it was through the media”. Another cause for addiction to drugs is having bad friends. Friends are very important, and it is easy to be affected by them. Having bad friends can lead to imitating them even if it takes a long time. Drugs can cause diseases such as AIDS and cancer. Diseases among addicts spread because of injections with previously used and polluted needles. Some addicts die because of the drugs.
Awareness lectures are the best solution to this problem. Police departments of the city should present awareness lectures in public places such as theatres, and in private places such as schools. These lectures should explain what drugs are, how they affect people, and what laws cover the punishment of drug crimes. In my opinion, this solution can benefit people because preventing people from using drugs is better than treating them for drug abuse.
Some might argue that passing strong laws is better than awareness lectures. Laws can prevent people from dealing with drugs because they will be afraid of getting caught by the police. This suggestion might be true, but it's not an ideal solution because it might graduate people who will be worse than before. These laws might not suit all kind of people which might let them to do thing worse than addicting drugs when they come out. (I think what you are trying to say here is that after a convicted criminal serves his time in prison, he may not be rehabilitated, and might go back out on the street worse than before.) Therefore, awareness lectures can reduce the number of people who become addicts.
Drug abuse is one of the problems that comes from rapid modernization in our country. It has many causes such as the influence of the media and bad friends. Moreover, it causes very bad effects such as disease and death. Preventing drug addiction by awareness lectures can help in solving the problem.
