Letter of Motivation, XYZ
My name is XYZ and I am a current student of Mechanical Engineering with the focus on Product Development and Design at the Technical University of XYZ. Studying abroad for one semester is a dream, which I kept in mind for a very long time. In the following text I would like to explain to you my academic interests, personal ambitions and future goals. I am quite convinced that studies at the university in Australia in the summer term of 2010 would not only be ideal for me and my career aspirations but would also definitely fulfil this long awaited dream.
My interest in modern technology was first awakened as I was a child while spending weekends in technical museums in Munich and nurturing the early fascination of mechanics. Since that period of time I knew definitely that I want to become an engineer. It is a well known fact that our modern and very dynamic society is in a need of innumerable material things which introduces a complex market with many different products. As a young, interested and ambitious person I aspire to join this development in a productive way in the future. One of the most important and essential question which Students of Engineering have is about finding their specialization, however I know my answer: In the future I want to combine technical engineering with technical design. In addition I find the new interdisciplinary subject "Bionic" to be very fascinating, also because natural organism connect form and function in a perfect way.
During my first years at the University, I had to pass 19 exams which all were at a technologically advanced level and absolve several internships as well as complete many technical drawings in order to reach the intermediate diploma. The degree of difficulty at the Technical University of XYZ is along with the Technical University of Aachen the highest in Germany, which also is shown in the ranking. It is enclosed with my application and displays the number of students who passed the intermediate diploma. Therefore I am in possession of a very good analytical basis, which I want to build upon, especially at your University as the high standard it represents is a well known fact.
I am concentrating on two modules in the main studies in XYZ. The first one is called "Aviation / Physics of Fluids". It is amazing how many courses are offered by your University and it would give me great pleasure improving my knowledge about the physics of fluids, air and currents and their exposure and utilisation to technical problems. I have found many courses in which I am interested and which bring me considerably closer to reaching my goals. Furthermore, I do not want to miss the opportunity taking courses concerning Aviation. An other important reason which made my choice to study at your University is that you enjoy a good reputation concerning this special branch of study. I am sure that I can increase and improve my technical knowledge.
My second module is called "Product Development and Technical Design". With a special attention on the processes during the development of products, students are able to learn special applications, which improve and accelerate the production. A further important aspect of this module is the creative aspect, its use and combination with technical engineering. In my opinion, the gap between technical engineering and technical design is not as wide as it seems and I can say that dealing with these two subjects and their combination represents my career aspirations in the future. I have already passed exams successfully in Industrial Design and joined a project in XYZ on a voluntary basis for four months. This was also lead by the University of Arts of XYZ and the Technical University of XYZ. In the winter semester 2010 I am planning to start a Master of Industrial Design, which will last two years at the Technical University of XYZ and will be parallel to my last year of my diploma. Taking courses concerning Design at your University would be a great challenge for me and will definitely bring me closer to realising my goals!
English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world which can be seen as being a mixed blessing concerning communication in business worldwide, as English is also the number one language for chit chat, especially among young people including me contacting friends all around the world. In my opinion, young people in particular are encouraged to have a good command of English.
Studying in Australia provides me with the opportunity to improve my English vocabulary, especially where technical words are concerned. As I can imagine working in English speaking country in the future or joining international projects, during the rest of my studies I think, that Australia would be the perfect place for me. Apart from the fact that your University enjoys good reputation, Brisbane offers me, as a student, several advantages, such as cheap living, a good infrastructure between University and downtown, as well as the possibility for students to earn money easily, like working at a bar or a restaurant. On the one hand Brisbane is one of Australia's most emerging cities with a view to economics and on the other hand it is a well known fact that people from Australia are friendly, welcoming and open minded. These and many further aspects are affecting my intention of studying abroad in Australia in a positive way.
All in all I think that I have found my personally perfect place to study abroad. After a lot of research concerning advantages and disadvantages of technical universities all around the globe, your University convinced me because of their reputation and academic offers. And XYZ as a city is simply the icing on the cake!
