Travelers with time and (high-clearance vehicles) can drive to the canyon rim on unpaved roads for dramatic views. USFS Rd 517 (open July to October), a quarter of a mile south of the Hells Canyon Riggins office on US 95, climbs 17 miles to the rim and ends 2 miles later at the breathtaking Heaven's Gate Lookout.
