Hi, I have a long sentence to translate and I've been thinking of it for a long time. Could you please help me improve it:

The researchers must initiate or train in the field of research management as high a number as possible of students in the final years, respectively of resident physicians and young engineers, with a view to elaborating proposals for national and international projects.

The idea is that they should train as many students etc. as possible to elaborate project proposals.

Is "respectively" correctly placed there? If not, is there any rule of using it?

Thank you very much!

The researchers must initiate or train as many final-year students as possible in the field of research management, particularly/specifically  resident physicians and young engineers, with a view to elaborating proposals for national and international projects.

"respectively" does not relate to anything in the sentence.

Hi,

I'd lke to add a comment about 'respectively'. Generally speaking, it means 'in the order specified'.

eg Tom and Mary went shopping. They spent $20 and $50 respectively. In other words, Tom spent $20 and Mary spent $50.

eg The researchers must initiate or train in the field of research management as high a number as possible of students in the final years,  with a view to elaborating proposals for national and international projects. These students should be drawn from two groups, respectively resident physicians and young engineers.

Best wishes, Clive
