Hello everyone,

Is anyone here particularly good at history?

What general time and place were you thinking of?

Hi Nef,

Actually I was just thinking of history in general. Now that you asked, I'd like to know if anyone here could answer the below question:

How did the constrcution of railways affect the economy and people's lives in the nineteenth century?

If your original question was about history in general, Englishuser, so we had better stick to that topic. Wink [;)] You can always start a new discussion, of course.

I think no one knows real history (but not the official one that is taught in schools, universities, etc usually) because it has been garbled for all humans' existance. Though, if not to pay attention to lots of clean sheets that take place in official history, one may be good at it. The only disadvantage of such history is that it can't give answers to a great many questions. Smile [:)]

Hi Ruslana,

Would you be able to answer my question?

Ruslana  +  259556 Sat, 26 Aug 06 03:29 PM

I am not good at history (either real or official) so, if there's someone who's particulary good at history, that is not me for sure. Stick out tongue [:P]

Hi nona the brit,

Let me answer the question for you:

How did the constrcution of railways affect the economy and people's lives in the nineteenth century?

An ordinary answer would include at least the following:

  • It became easier to transport raw materials and industrial products.
  • The iron- and steel-industry expands.
  • Continents are connected thanks to new railways.
  • Faster communications.
  • Rural districts came into existence nearby the railways.

A praiseworthy answer would, in addition to this, include the following:

  • Capital is needed for the construction of railways.
  • People invest in the constuction of railways.
  • The importance of the railroads, e.g. travelling between the East and the West coast of the United States became easier; the trans-Siberian railway
  • The railways and imperialism.
  • Telecommunications, for instance the telegraph developed.
  • The concept of time is standardised owing to train timetables.
  • Increased migration.
  • Changed world pictures amongst people.

What do you think of this, nona the brit?

Ok, other pluses

application of the new engineering skills to other fields

And you don't really seem to have any negative effects suffered, for example

loss of trade to other transport networks (canals/road/drovers)

pollution and environmental effects of railroads

negative effect on local populations, for example the native Americans.
