Hi,

Tell me how are they different in terms of their meaning? I got these two sentences from a yahoo dictionary.

1) A sad note threaded the whole story.

    A sad note threaded a whole story.

2. I think the whole story is a scandal.

    I think a whole story is a scandal.

the refers to a specific thing, while a refers to something in general

i like the story      ((this means you're talking about a particular story))
i like a story      ((this means you like stories in general)
