Hello,

I'm kind of cross posting with this post http://www.englishforums.com/English/EnglishWordExpertiseApproxLegal-Case/cgcdb/Post.htm but as I just discovered the Legal forum, it might be a better place to ask.

How would you call a "Pre-legal case" in the automotive industry? In French, we call that an "expertise", which is the process undertaken when 2 experts (person very knowledgeable in the field of automobile) - one being from the "car manufacturer" and from the "customer" side - met check everything in the car to determine the responsabilities and determine if the manufacturer or the customer has to pay...

Would in your opinion exists an English equivalent or should I stick with "Pre-legal case" as it is the last step before going to court?

Thanks in advance

Ludo

There is no exact equivalent of this in the English legal system. You may have an exchange of experts' reports. I think that something like "pre-trial investigation" might do it.

Translating legal stuff can be impossible as concepts, procedures and institutions do not correspond.

Thank you very much.

I think your looking for the term "claim".  When some one is involved in an accident and the insurance company is notified, most law firms and insurance companies give you a claim number.  If a claim cannot be settled, and a complaint is filed, then it becomes a law suit or litigation.
