So the International Olympic Committee is one body I know that has decided upon five continents........Thinking [*-)].

It depends on the purpose :

Geographically, there are 4 continents ; Eurasiafrica, America, Australia, Antartica.

Sociopolitically, there are 6 continents ; Afrika, Asia, Australia, Europe, South America, and North America.

Sportly, There are 5 continents ; Europe, America, Asia, Australia, Africa.

Historically, there was only one continent ; The Gondwana Land.

Geologically, there are 7 continents ; Eurasia, Africa-southAmerica, Australia, Antartica, North America, and India.

Frankly, I have no Idea how many continents there should be.....Smile [:)]

What's Gondwana Land? Thinking [*-)]

HOW  MANY  CONTINENTS  ARE  THERE ? A GEOGRAPHICAL PERSPECTIVE

Dear viewers,

Being a geographer, I think it my utmost duty to explain the CONTINENTS

CONTINENTS   A term given to the large landmasses and associated islands on the Earth's surface are generally and geologically SEVEN in number, namely :

  1. ASIA
  2. AFRICA
  3. NORTH AMERICA
  4. SOUTH AMERICA
  5. ANTARCTICA
  6. EUROPE
  7. AUSTRALIA

please note the following points on how and why geographers, historians and some countries use different meanings of the continents :

  • Geoligically, there are SEVEN continents as mentioned above
  • ANTARCTICA, the world's 5th largest continent is uninhabited, therefore it is mostly ignored ..................that makes SIX continents
  • Geographically, and sometimes the continents are consolidated :
  1. Europe and Asia are combined and termed "EURASIA"
  2. North America & South America are combined and termed as "AMERICA"
  • Some countries use "Oceania" or Australasia" in place of Australia
  • The Olympic flag represents the five continents as under :
  1. EURASIA
  2. AFRICA
  3. NORTH AMERICA
  4. SOUTH AMERICA
  5. AUSTRALIA

I hope I have given a detailed answer which I gaurantee is authentic.

Please, all of you, go to the library.  It is not possible for any of you to verify or dispute a query about factual information with your opinion.  For Young Californian, when someone gives you an answer you like, that doesn't make it true.  If you can't visit the library, or any of its many databases online, then ask someone whose knowledge you trust--please don't throw it out into the middle of anywhere on the internet hoping you will get an accurate response.  Most of these people have no idea what they are talking about.  Please go do your own research.

INDIA!?! What!! Stick out tongue [:P] lol

I was taught in Briton that there are 7 Continents, as are are most people it seems from the the US and Europe - with the exception of Spain, along with Latin American countries. I know this as I lived in Spain and now live in Central America, and due to the fact that the Americas are joined - apart from the Panama Canel, they claim that its one "landmass". Though I would have to say it seems obvious that there is a clear difference between the landmass of N. America and S.America, and besides the Central American are relitivly new in the world, whereas before North and South America were split.

AND as for the idea of "Eurasiafrica" - Europe, asia AND Africa!! No way, have people not heard of a place called the Red Sea?? Eurasia seems a fair point but surly Africa is clearly a seperate Continent...

I.e. North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceana, and Antractica. Wink [;)]
