That looks a lot better. I saw it, in a piece of serious writing, spelled the way I wrote it. and it didn't look right.

I notice that the song lyrics always seem to show it as three words: "kum bay ya".
As somthing of an attempt to phoneticize a Gullah phrase, there will inevitably be variant spellings.

Maybe that's to syllabically display the word to match the musical notation.
