Hello,

I am applying to several Ph. D. programs, and I need to learn how to mask or hide my Southern West Virginia accent.  It is not cute- it is embarrassing in a business setting. If anyone has ever seen "Matewon" (movie about WV coal country), you will understand.  Imagine giving a presentation at Carnegie, sounding like your "grand pappy is the lead McCoy."  This is no joke.  Any advice?

Thank you,

Worried in WV

I think John Nash has done fairly well with that accent.

The best way to improve your english accent/speaking skills is to talk English with those around you and native speakers alike, there are numerous sites that provide English teaching online. It may be really difficult at first to get used to replying in English if someone talks to you in your native language - but think of it as practice and maybe tell them that you are practicing English and you would like their support. You never know, it could go a long way!

Cheers

Hi,

What do you mean when you say you don't have an accent? You certainly do. Everybody does. It is not possible to speak a language without an accent.

Im gonna try the digital voice recorderer. Im from costa rica and haven't been able to reduce my accent. I try to mimic native speakers but it's not that simple. I guess recording your voice sounds more logical to me so you can see where the accent  gets in the way.

Well Im not linguist but its really hard, nearly impossible to completely get rid of a foreign accent. The reason is because your brain is hard-wired to speak in your native tongue. When you are very young and you develope the capacity for speech your brain forges permanent neuro pathways for that specific language. These pathways "solidify" at a very young age and remain permanent for your life.  Even if you move to a different country at a young age and learn to speak a different language you will still have slight phonetic remants of your old language. Take for example someone born in Japan who learns Japanese and s/he does not learn how to say "L" (Japanese language I believe is bereft of the "L" sound). That person moves to the the States and learns fluent engish but will still have trouble making the "L" sound. Instead of saying "really" they would say "rearry". I learned this when a friend of mine tried to teach me Russian; some sounds I just dont have the ability to make.  Now actors can do it because they are consciously aware of what sounds they are making...do you really want to always be consciously be aware of what sounds you are making?? You sound pretty American but you would sound like a mentally handicapped American. I say be proud of your accent most people appreciate them, except for hicks ; )

It really depends on the individual. I've met several people that moved to the US from non-English speaking countries when they were 15 or 16 and have a perfect American accent. I've also met a fair number of people that moved to the US in their early-mid twenties and have very minimal accents when speaking English.

www.accentschool.com offers free software that can help you reduce your accent.  Might start there.  It explains why you have an accent in the first place and what you can do about it.  Good luck.

honey all you gotta do is is just start listening to people who don't have your accent. see im from pennsylvania, but because of my family i have a deep southern accent and when i went to school i was seriously ridiculed for it. when i started to talk to different people i started catching on, on how to pronounce different words their way instead of mine. in the end though i moved right back down to georgia, and got my accent back.

                       i hope i helped.
