In New York and in the Southern US, people who live right next door to each other can have very different accents. One person could have a very thick regional accent and the other could speak perfect standard American English. For a native speaker, usually the question of accent comes down to education. The higher an education a person receives, the more likely a person will be free of an accent. This does not mean that either person is any more intelligent however.

In the US, the Southern accent is often stygmatized as sounding "uneducated" so it is not uncommon for many Southern children to try to consciously get rid of their accents. I have often wondered if a person who has already consciously tried to change their accent in their own native language and succeeded would be more likely to be accent free in a foreign one.

They certainly would be more conscious of their pronunciation.

I must say, I am American, and I find accents (Other than American) very attractive. There are few accents I cannot understand, or have a hard time with understanding, and that even means some AmericansSmile [:)] I love the Lithuanian accent. It's so beautiful. I like any accents tho. They give personailty to a voice. Maybe wanting to fit in might be a reason for getting rid of your accent, I wouldn't wanna do it completely. As long as you are understood when you speak, that's all that mattersSmile [:)] Even some Brittish friends have told me the love the American accent (I don't see why.. lol). But I think it's Americans who are mostly attracted to other accents rather than their own. Even if they are from other parts of the USA. For instance, A southern speaker can go to New England and have a very hard time undertanding the accent up there, but going out west, and Eastern USA, there seems not to be a strong one.

Godspeed

well the problem is most people find european accents charming. however, asian accents on the other hand are often ridiculed.

In your opinion, what are the best accents you have ever heard?.

How do you rate french, spanish, german, etc... accents?.

Thanks in advance.

Everyone of us have a unique accent. It is more important to learn to write good English grammar rather than speaking as native but wrong grammar. Be confident say it right with your accent. Don't feel ashamed.
There are books for learning English Phonics available in libraries. there are more than 40 English sounds. Try sounds English publish by Longman. Good luck.
