Another thing that would probably be helpful is to look at the SAMPA charts for English and compare them to those of your native language to identify the consonants and vowels that differ, and then practice those.

English SAMPA Chart

European SAMPA Chart

If you look up your language on Wikipedia (in English) it should have a consonant table and vowel chart for you to compare.

Your suggestion is excellent as long as the learner knows how the sounds unique to English (or not found in the learner's native tongue) knows how the English sounds are produced. For this, you need a model for imitation of some sort.

Yes, that's true. Here's an excellent site.

By the way, I'm the "Anon" above.

I think it's more about pronunciation than accent. Having an accent is a good thing. It means that you can speak another language. I like my accent. I don't speak really good english, but I still like it when people ask me about my accent.

My cousin tino bought a thing on ebay called ENGLISH without an accent, and it had this recording that we practice with, and it totally helped him sound better when he speaks english, and he learned more english with the recordings than at school. And I'm using it now, and it really helps.

Hi.  You really don't want to get rid of your accent.  What you want to do is add to your inventory of speech sounds.  You can do that by enrolling in a training program that teaches you the Speech Rules of Standard American English if thats the accent you want to learn.

Hi simplyblessedwithlove,

I know it's okay to have an accent because the other language you speak is not your mother tongue; therefore, an expectation that a non-native should have the accent of a native is unfair and unjust. We all should be proud of the accent we have; it's a part of who we are.

That's true, but unfortunately people are, just like you said, very prejudiced. In the United Kingdom, for instance, many people feel they need to soften their regional accent because people with certain regional accents sound less qualified. Of course a marked RP-accent has its drawbacks, too, which is a very bad thing.

What exactly does it mean to you to get rid of your accent?

Yeah, isn't it ironic!!! Even the natives get sucked into this whole nonsense, prejudiced judgement. It happens in my language, Vietnamese, also. I was from the South; I have the Southerner accent. Some of the Vietnamese Southerners dislike the Northerner accent. They think it's annoying and incorrect while the Northerners think otherwise.

I've worked in retails. And I have to say some customers are very narrow-minded. Sometimes, they would ask to speak to my supervisor because they can tell I have an accent; therefore, they think I don't  know enough English to comprehend. Angry [:@]
