That's true, but unfortunately people are, just like you said, very prejudiced. In the United Kingdom, for instance, many people feel they need to soften their regional accent because people with certain regional accents sound less qualified. Of course a marked RP-accent has its drawbacks, too, which is a very bad thing.

Yeah, isn't it ironic!!! Even the natives get sucked into this whole nonsense, prejudiced judgement. It happens in my language, Vietnamese, also. I was from the South; I have the Southerner accent. Some of the Vietnamese Southerners dislike the Northerner accent. They think it's annoying and incorrect while the Northerners think otherwise.
I've worked in retails. And I have to say some customers are very narrow-minded. Sometimes, they would ask to speak to my supervisor because they can tell I have an accent; therefore, they think I don't know enough English to comprehend. ![Angry [:@]](/emoticons/emotion-12.gif)
