A lot of teachers tell me that the only way to improve my english standard is through reading storybooks and newspapers. However, nobody has told me before what are the techniques to adopt while reading to improve my english. What should I take note and do while reading so that i can improve my vocabulary and general knowledge? I hope you will be able to help me. thanks.

One technique I know is by guessing through context and try to remember in what kind of sentence the vocab used

Yes, reading many examples of the word being used will help you remember it.  Making up your own examples can also improve your memory of words by 670%.

You maintain a notebook with the words you learn and write down a good sentence beside each word.Just revise them randomly whenever you find time.Discuss or better make a blog on some topic each day and share it with your friends.There are many such ideas you can implement them.

 Using the reading story and newspaper to improve English is the best method of all. However, you do need to have proper instruction on how to use this method. 

These are some simple instructions for those interested in this;

1. Find out what level of English you are at and read the books one level below your level.

2. Learn to use the everything in the book such as  the title, pictures, and of course words to understand how story is progressing.

3. Try to read the book till the end without looking through the dictionary. You should not stop reading to look for mean of any new words. By keep reading the book to end many times, will  make you able to guess the meaning of any new words. Once you can read the books without looking through the dictionary, you can consider yourself to be at intermediate level of English. Of course you should always use the dictionary to double check the actual meaning of words only after you read it few time to the end. 

4.. Make your own vocabulary list of words from the book and use the sentences from the book as example sentence of that word.

 

This will give you some idea to how to use reading to improve your English
