That's sort of a musician's joke.  "Do you know your dog's throwing up in the corner" (or some such nonsense).  (reply)  "No, but if you hum a few bars I'll see if I can pick it up."

The implication is that "Your dog's throwing up in the corner" is the name of a song which a customer wants to hear.  The piano player suggests that if the customer will demonstrate how the song goes, perhaps the piano player can pick up the idea, and play the song for him.

The joke is so well-known, you don't even have to give the whole line.

It's an old joke.

If ask if you know a certain song, and you say "No, but if you hum a few bars..." meaning if I hum a small section (a few measure, or a few bars) of the tune, it may sound more familiar than just the title alone.

Applying that meaning of "Do you know...?" or "Do you remember...?" to things that have nothing to do with music is the basis of the joke.

"Do you remember if I unplugged the coffee pot?"

"No, but if you hum a few bars..." -- a joke as if there were a song called If I Unplugged the Coffee Pot.

There's also that other musician's joke, "Know it? I wrote it!" Not fit for a family website though. :)
