Does the pot perform the action of breaking? I compare it as  given below. 2. I broke the pot. Here in (2) , the action of breaking is done by the subject "I". It is very simle to understand. I broke the pot.  The agent is I.  The agent performed the action of causing the pot to become broken. The pot broke.  No agent is mentioned.  Nothing is mentioned that caused the pot to become broken.  But the pot became broken (somehow). Compare: They rang the bell. The bell rang.
