Hi

Forgive my question but what exactely an idiom is?
pieanne  +  106382 Tue, 07 Jun 05 06:05 PM
An idiom is an expression, which cannot be changed, and whose words, should you translate them word by word, wouldn't make sense in any other language.
That fixed expression corresponds to a fixed meaning to the ears of the interlocutor.

Does it make sense?

Well, adomi, you've really got yourself in the big bread mixer, haven't you? Smile [:)]

Don't you hate it when someone sets a rabbit on you?

Don't get on your four horses! Even if your hair is in battle!

Smile [:)]

Hi

Well Pieanne, I guess I understand what you are saying; I guess all the languages have such expression, even tribal languages...and I think it's fair enough. To those who are conservative, I guess it makes sense, it may be their pride..It can be also seen as a mean for assessing people's knowledge of the language. But my question is: do we really need them in our languages? Isn't there other simple ways to express one's ideas rather than using idioms?

There are, Adomi, but the language wouldn't be as much fun without them... at least for native speakers. Idioms, I'm sure, are popular in any language.

Oulalala!!!!

CalifJim, I wasn't in a bread mixer, until you got me in one.

I like rabbits...their meat is quite delicious, but I really hate it when someone stand me up or ditch me (I guess setting a rabbit on someone is the french equivalent of : "poser un lapin").

I've never ridden a horse...but four at once would simply be killing me. (U meant : "Monter sur tes grand cheveaux?")..My hair...always cut short.

Conclusion..Please CalifJim re-say it in a language I can understand...
