Hi,

Since "freshman/sophomore/junior/senior" are nouns, it needs the article "a", am I right?

e.g. I am a freshman

Thanks in advance.

Yes, but they can also be used as adjectives, therefore allowing "my freshman/sophomore year in school" without an article.
