Is it "can not" or "cannot?"

I come across both usages but I am unsure which is correct. Are both correct, but only appropriate at certain times? Is the difference regional?

Thank you so much for your help!

'can not' is AmE. In  BrE, 'cannot' is used.

'can not' is AmE.
This comment is not consistent with my own (American) education.  In school we were told that cannot is the only acceptable form.
