I was reading this self-help book, and there are 2 sentences which i didn't completely understand.

Here they are:

1) I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean.

2) Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance.

Can someone make these 2 sentences more clearer for me to understand?

Thanks.

Isn't this from a song?

Anyway, the first one, I believe, is suggesting that you keep a sense of perspective. When you, one person, stand beside the great, vast, huge ocean, you should realize that you're not that big. It's to keep you from feeling too self-important. You may be important in your company or in your town, but compared with the entire world, you're small.

For the second, you could think the same thing ("the heavens" is another way to say "the sky") or it could be a suggestion to remember the appreciate the beauty in nature. A "passing glance" is just a quick look. Take the time to look at, and appreciate the beauty of the world.

Someone else may have another interpretation for the second one, or even both of them, but that's my understanding.

    Hey guys Smile [:)]

These sentences seem to be like proverbs.
I agree with Grammar Geek about the meaning of the 2nd sentence. "The heavens" is frequently used in literature with the meaning "the sky". I guest it sounds more melodious in the passage ^^

But about the 1st one, I hav no idea why its wrote "still feel small". I understand from the words that smone has felt small before standing behind the ocean, so what they mean is:  If u have felt small already, u should keep feeling small when u saw the sea. It means that they trying to say: dont feel "greater" when u see smthing great??? Its so confusing!!! ><

Anyone has another idea about this?

Who will believe in you if you don't believe in yourself?

Well, like I said, but perhaps not too clearly: Don't ever feel too full of your own self-importance. Don't get too egotistical.

It is, indeed not clear at all. I still confuse why its "still feel small" but not just "feel small". With only 1 more word the meaning has turned so far to another way...
