Some people think it is acceptable to use animals for the benefits of the human beings. Some people think it is wrong to exploit animals for the human purposes. What is your opinion? Thanks to the medical advancement, the average life span of human beings has been longer in the recent decade. It is common for scientists to use animals as models to test various kinds of drugs, medicines and chemicals. Animal right activists vigorously against such practice; I, however, believe it is acceptable as the following reasons. In the first place, animal experiment can be greatly beneficial to our way of life. Hardly can human health be guaranteed if therapies are not completely investigated before using in the hospitals. For instance, taking new medicines that without testing can be dangerous to patients. Not only their illnesses may not be cured, more seriously, it can be fatal if the medicines are not suitable to them or have side-effects. Therefore, it is reasonable for scientists to do animal experiments to secure human lives. Furthermore, there are not any substitutes found to replace animal experimentation at the time. Science is a study that involves experiments. Never can a mere hypothesis be recognized without the step of investigation and a vast number of experiments. Especially in the area of medical science, it is vital to show evidence on the effectiveness and safety of the new therapy and treatment, before they are in real practice. Animal experimentation is the only choice. On the other hand, animal right activists point out that such practice is immoral. They are right; however, isn’t it moral to do the same thing on human beings? Moreover, scientists have already tried to modify and refine the experiments so that least pain would be suffered by the animals. It seems to me that they have tried their best. All things considered, animal experimentation is still essential to the development of medical science. It is greatly beneficial to human health, and hardly can we find an alternative for it. What scientists can do better is to refine the experiment techniques.
