I have a word that is listed an uncountable noun. Can you tell me why it has "a" there?

hissing:   ... a silence broken only by a steady hissing from above my head.

Here, the "hissing" is an "s  sound"; I don't see why it should be an uncountable... A hissing, the hissing sound quite right to me.
