What altitude?  Living on the water means they're always at sea level.

THERE IS NO ANSWER ITS A MYSPACE CHAIN LETTER!

I think "NO" makes sense because Children would say "NO"  BUT "NO" is also the abbreviation for nitric oxide, a gas..

Nitric Oxide (NO) is naturally found in the human body. It is a neurotransmitter, which means that it helps different parts of the body communicate with each other. As a neurotransmitter, it has various actions in the body. So, for example, in the bladder, nitric oxide acts to relax the urethra and some of the muscles involved in urination. (makes boys pee?)

Nitric oxide also a critical link in the hair growth process, which would make girls brush their hair.

Nitric Oxide is also involved in tear production.

Because nistic acid dialates blood vessels and is involved with hair folicles, can it give loft to the polar bears fur. Since each hair is translucent, This would help give its white appearance.

maybe it's a start?

OK people

The solution to the riddle is in how it is asked.

Worlds hardest riddle

"I turn polar bears white
and I will make you cry.
I make guys have to pee
and girls comb their hair.
I make celebrities look stupid
and normal people look like celebrities.
I turn pancakes brown
and make your champane bubble.
If you sqeeze me, I'll pop.
If you look at me, you'll pop.
Can you guess the riddle?"

Notice this:  the final line is part of the riddle, not the follow-up question; IT IS the riddle.  That question is what little kids would answer.  It is an exercise in humility.  The reference to Harvard grads and Kindergarteners-the "intellectual" vs the "simple," is the clue(making whether or not it was actually posed to those groups irrelevant).  We grown-ups think there is an answer for everything-that every thing can, or rather must, be solved.  When faced with an illogical problem set, we strive to find the logic, even to force it, rather than recognize that sometimes things are just silly and don't make sense.  Kids have the audacity to look at silliness and recognize it for what its worth.  It would be interesting to pose this question across the grade levels and see at what point kids start ignoring the Question and try to find the "solution ."

Kudos to whoever thought up this humdinger!

pressure makes celebrities look stupid?

Technically, polar bears aren't white though...  Their fur is actually transparent and their skin is black-ish.  Not that this solves anything.... but, just as an aside. Wink [;)]

have to comment on this stupid idiotic riddle and this explanation where saomeone has written that polar bears fur turns white because of altitude. But polar bears live on ice, sea ice to be exact. 0m isn't exactly a very high altitude isn't it. Also why waste a load of students time with a stupid riddle that makes no sense, this is a wind up plain and simple. and the person who's post i'm replying to is an idiot.

if it's not the trick answer of "no" i'll go with water or rain..

water or rain

Dirty polar bears are cleaned(become white) by rain, rainy weather makes you depressed, The sound of running water makes people have to pee, rain makes hair frizzy, celebrities look stupid with all their make up and hairdo's destroyed by rain, and people look like stars with wet hair (? swimsuit edition.. or rockstarlook hehe) If you pour water on pancakes they will turn brown, if it rains in your champagne glass there will be bubbles, and raindrops pop when you touch them. When you look at rain and it falls on your head there's a popping sound?
