ha. America dosn't have just one accent. I think most of us are noted for either a lack of, or an eclectic accent. Smile [:)] and yes living somewhere dose help with gaining an accent. One of the best ways is to immerse yourself in it. Big Smile [:D]

Take a holiday in Scotland. I recommend Edinburgh where the accent is quite pleasant (in my opinion). Take a pocket-size recorder. Collect as much speech as you can.

LoL, Isn't that illigal??

There is a popular show up in Scotland called "Chewin' The Fat". They have a rap that you could download from Limewire, (Chewin' The Fat - "Put Your Hands Up In The Air"). This song shows you their Scotish accent. Also here are some words that the ScotishMen say:

(They are pronounced roughly the way i have spelt them although they are still spelt the English way)

English-Scotish:

Head - Hid,    Dead - Did,    Gonna - Gonney,    Can't - Canny,    Them - Dey,   My - Ma,   Mum - Mar,   The - De

Here are just a few words off the top of my head but I think of any more I will inform you. Hope they have helped you.

I know what ya mean! I'm doing a play and I need an accent. I might be able to be in the lead role if I have a good accent for the auditions. I think the accent should be Scottish because when I read the script, I thought the lead role was Scottish. But I'm NOT Scottish, I'm Canadian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This has been said millions of times here before but (a) Scottish accents are among the most hardest accents to learn and sound convincing (Mel Gibson in Braveheart is a great example of a poorly portrayed accent) and (b) there are loads of regional variations.  I come from the East Coast of Scotland and I don't sound like a West Coaster nor like someone from the northern parts of the country.  I think if you are really wanting a particular Scottish accent, hire a voice coach (preferably a Scot!).  Even though I'm Scottish, I don't like the way I speak and it still amazes me why anyone would want to talk the way we do!  Please also bear in mind that not only do you need to get the accent right, you need to get the dialect right as many of us pepper our vocab. with old Scot's words e.g. wee=small, pinkie=little finger, baffie=slipper etc.  Hope this helps a little!

Maybe a site you know that goes over the basics of Scottish or Irish accents? I think Scottish and Irish accents are the coolest things ever!
