There is an English idiom "to have a frog in one's throat" which means "To feel the need to cough; to have a tickle in one's throat; to have a scratchy or uneven voice."

"put his put down" doesn't mean anything to me. The nearest I can think of is "to put one's foot down" which means to insist on something or, in a different meaning, to accelerate (when in a car or other vehicle).
