What is the correct between these: If he were there, or If he was there?

My take:

I don't like to write something without seeing the full sentence but to me both of them can be used.

If he was there... (indicative mood)  This sounds informal.

If he were there.. (subjunctive mood) I always choose this mood.

If he was there, I'm sure he saw what happened.

If he were there, he could help you.

Both are possible.
