Read, read and read! There's no better way if you don't have access to an English teacher next to you.

Absolutely thrilling, actually. Often, if I can manage to lift them in the first place, I can't put them down.

How about trying some cards you would keep in your pockects wherever you go. You might write, say, ten words you want to learn, each with one or two examples of usage, you know, the usual collocations. Then you can turn to them when not busy,as in a bus or when waiting for someone. Once you know for sure you know the words, it's then time to replace the card and learn more words. Something else is you must look for the opportunity to use the words you have just learnt when talking to English speaking friends or fellow students. This makes using the word a memorable occasion you're not likely to forget, more so if you get to impress your friends!

What if you forget your pen?

Who says you need one? The words you have in your card are those you decided you would learn during, say, the week. You simply do not commit them to memory, but use an aid until you can see the words and the examples in your mind without even looking at the card.
Anyway, carrying a pen with you helps a lot, in case you here a new word you want to be able to recall afterwards. Something else, when I'm watching a Brit or USA picture I keep a notepad next to me so I can jot down useful words and expressions.
Cheers,
Leonar
