"here" is like "near me" or "near us"; "there" is like "near you" or "near him, her, it, or them".
Both are correct.
Suppose you are in your office. A friend of yours is looking for a document. Let's say it is the County Tax Report. He stands just outside your office, looking into the office at you, talking to you.
-- I can't find the County Tax Report. Is it in there?
-- In where?
-- In your office! Is the County Tax Report in there?
-- No. It's not in here. Why do you think it is in here?
-- Well, yesterday it was in there. I saw it in there.
-- But it's not in here now. Go look in Gary's office. Maybe it's in there.
-- No. I checked in there. It's not in there.
Hope that helps.
