Can we say there is some damage on /in the ceiling?  Is this the correct sentence and which preposition should be used? Thank you.

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master-- that's all.'

But we can say "inflict damage on something", right? Also, "repair damage (found) on the ceiling".

Hume said that if we had perfect or complete descriptive knowledge of reality, we could not, by reasoning, derive a single valid "ought".

Hello M.,

"On" in your example relates to the verb "inflict", not the noun "damage":

1. He inflicted his views on a weary public.

2. They inflicted heavy losses on the Allied forces.

3. The present perfect has inflicted pain on ESL students since 1354 AD.
