This question has no verified answers · 9 replies
Hello.

Which one is correct?

Prostitutes in the streets

Prostitutes on the streets

I'm in favour of the first on viz. in the streets but a classmate of mine argued that it should be the second one.

True enough in American English. However, in British English IN is used as American English uses ON.

Example: Tim lives in Highwater Ave. (British) Tim lives on Highwater Ave. (American)

True enough in America and Scotland. However, in England IN is used as American and Scotish people use ON.

Example: Tim lives in Highwater Ave. (England) Tim lives on Highwater Ave. (America and Scotland)

By the way, an Englishman lives on the road, though he does not live on the street, but in it.
