I think they both sound OK but which is correct and why??

I think that in is correct because matter here has the same meaning as situation or case. People use in this situation and in this case. So, I'll use in this matter.

In this situation it sounds much better than "what are your thoughts in this matter?".

How can I tell the difference of which to use?
