Robert and his wife were quite people who lived in Texas and who seemed sensibily happy to take Hot Springs and the rest of the Clintons in small doses.

Any light cast on this sentence will be highly appreciated, especially the "in small doses" part.

These were people who live a quiet and reserved life, who only socialize occasionally. They like seeing people - but not for a long time or in large groups. They like their social life to be in small doses.
