You lot probably think I'm a stuffed up old man for saying this, but since you're the only group of people in the entire universe who may give a damn, I have to offload my indignation upon somebody... you are the unlucky few.
And that is EXACTLY WHAT I MEAN TO TALK ABOUT! You are NOT the lucky LESS. That would make absolutely NO SENSE whatsoever. One can talk about less time, or less cabbage, or whatever, but one CAN NEVER, EVER, EVER IN ENGLISH talk about less tickets or less cabbages.
WHY?
BEACUSE IT IS COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY WRONG!
Coming from the Latin, pauci = a few, paulum = a little, a small amount
and also:
quantus? = how much/how big?, quot? = how many?
THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NUMBER AND SIZE MOST HUMAN BEINGS CHOOSE TO IGNORE.
Teachers at my school say it; and what sort of example are they setting then tostudents who also say it (luckily I have not observed yet any English teachers saying it, but my English teacher is good and I have not had much opportunity of observing the worst ones - generally one runs!)?
It is fewer cabbages and fewer tickets or less cabbage (singular, rather than plural) and less time.
This is just a simple singular and plural, quantity rule and really not that difficult. I know, because I myself make plenty of mistakes, but none on this elementory level! HOW CAN PEOPLE WHO CAN'T TALK THUS LIVE WITH THEMSELVES!
Please, if there is anyone out there who feels similarly about this affront to our firm-rooted English, tell me now, before I die miserable, disgruntled and dejected.
