Hi,

Let me try to explain through an example.

You do something stupid, and I say 'That was smart!' That's an ironic remark.

I mean one thing, but I say the opposite.

Best wishes, Clive

PS That's a basic kind of definition. It can get a bit more compicated.

You might also want to consider 'sarcasm', which is a form of irony but more hurtful in nature.

so irony may be kidding when people are talking, but sarcasm will be more serious?

can irony be like a thought of a person or someone narrates something?

Hi,

so irony may be kidding when people are talking, but sarcasm will be more serious? Yes.Irony does not have to be personal comments, either.

eg It's puring with rain, and I say to my friend 'This is a good day for our picnic!' I'm expressing one meaning by saying the opposite.

can irony be like a thought of a person or someone narrates something?

Yes. It's not just words, it can be an 'idea' or 'thought'. It's like 'a meeting between opposites'.

eg Tom asks Mary to marry him. She refuses, because she loves money and Tom is very poor. She marries Fred, instead. The day after Mary's wedding to Fred, Tom wins ten million dollars in the lottery. That's ironic.

Best wishes, Clive

It seems like sarcasm is more directed at a person? do u have example to show the difference between irony and sarcasm? can the last example "Tom asks Mary...."also shows sarcasm?

by the way, what grade are you at? This is fairly easy to search on the internet and find the difference:

Cambridge Dictionary says:

Irony:

a means of expression which suggests a different, usually humorous or angry, meaning for the words used:

Her voice heavy with irony, Simone said, "We're so pleased you were able to stay so long."
(= Her voice made it obvious they were not pleased).

--------------------

Sarcasm:

the use of remarks which clearly mean the opposite of what they say, and which are made in order to hurt someone's feelings or to criticize something in an amusing way:

"You have been working hard, " he said with heavy sarcasm, as he looked at the empty page.

Hi,

can the last example "Tom asks Mary...."also shows sarcasm?

No, sarcasm requires words. In the 'Tom and Mary' example, the irony was not spoken, it lay in what happened.
