today is an adverb or a noun      Is today an adverb in any of these sentences. If so, why?

What's the date today?
He's going to ring you at some point today.
Today is even hotter than yesterday!

Is that today's paper?
He left today, which is a Tuesday, so he should be back today.

Here is my best explanation....

shugao

  1. What's the date today?   What is the date (of) today? It is possessive. Only nouns take possessive case.
  2. He's going to ring you at some point today. When is he ringing? Today. (Adverb of time)
  3. Today is even hotter than yesterday! It is the subject of the sentence, so it is a noun.  If I said, "It's hot today" then today is an adverb.
  4. Is that today's paper? See #1
  5. He left today, which is a Tuesday, so he should be back today. When did he leave? today. Adverb of time.
