(Warning the Variety article has spoilers)
Todd McCarthy at Variety likes "Apocalypto"
"Mel Gibson is always good for a surprise, and his latest is that "Apocalypto" is a remarkable film. Set in the waning days of the Mayan civilization, the picture provides a trip to a place one's never been before, offering hitherto unseen sights of exceptional vividness and power."
But this is what caught my attention.
"Without a doubt, "Apocalypto" is the best-looking big-budget film yet shot digitally; one can't tell it wasn't shot on film."

"Production is a wonder. Dean Semler's camera moves relentlessly through the densest of foliage and over the roughest of terrain on locations near Veracruz and in the rainforests of Catemaco, with some additional shooting done in Costa Rica and the U.K.; Gibson clearly knew the impact the lenser of the second and third "Mad Max" films could deliver. More remarkable still is that pic was shot on the new high definition Genesis camera system. Without a doubt, "Apocalypto" is the best-looking big-budget film yet shot digitally; one can't tell it wasn't shot on film."

It helps that green is the dominant color on video and this one's full of green. I think it's going to do very well at the box office, too, with the other kind of green.

I've seen some impressive results with video, using new lens adapters and whatnot, though still not as nice-looking as film yet.

I am awestruck that Mel Gibson pulled it off. I remember years ago dreamily telling a barmaid how stories of the Mayan culture could make for amazing films. She replied, "No White people? Nah, won't happen. Do you want another beer?"
The Mayas, like the Aztecs, were an advanced civilization, yet engaged in bloody human sacrifices (as did the oft-romanticized Celts of Europe, who also decorated their homes with the skulls of vanquished foes, and sometimes even practiced cannibalism. The Brits have come a long way, baby.)

Apocalypto is sure to be a hit in Latin America, starting with Mexico. Imagine the cool video games that will spring from it.
(I guess Mel Gibson is living evidence of the controversial theory that all geniuses have an extreme flip-side, sometimes ugly. For example Isaac Newton was a mean, vindictive, and superstitious SOB who believed in ghosts)

The only place Mel can go from here is Genghis Khan and the Mountain of Skulls.
Or The Apocalypse: No , It Ain't Pretty!

I don't know about film being dead, but I'll give DVD being dead in about 5 years.
http://www.smh.com.au/news/home-theatre/china-to-phase-out-dvd-players- report/2006/11/29/1164777686817.html
EVD is 5 times better quality than DVD, you can fit more on it, and China are stopping making DVDs as from 2008. Which will of course make the DVD players more expensive, as a lot of the players are made using cheap Chinese labour.
Since old DVDs can be played on EVD players, and EVDs will work on current DVD drives on computers, I can't see DVD lasting more than another few years.

David Lynch says he's sworn off film for good. Anyone looking forward to *Inland Empire*?

"Huh? For the Trizillionth time, it aint the camera."

Uh, Chip, to a decent degree it kinda is the camera at the Gibson/Lucas/etc. level.
Take a look at the trailer - the colors I see very much lend themselves to high-end video, kind of like Mann shot the night stuff in Collateral because he said it gave him a look he couldn't get without video.

As for the rest of it, yeah, I agree.
