Is "I trust..." BrEn?

Once or twice something moved about with a rustle and a splash amongst the rushes at the side of the pond. "I trust that is not a rat," said Mr. Jeremy Fisher; "I think I had better get away from here."

This is from Beatrix Potter's book. Would Americans say "I trust (that...)"? Is it strictly BrEn?

Please remember that this book was published more than a hundred years ago.  This wouldn't be an everyday way of expressing yourself in modern BrE.

"I trust (that)..." is not an expression that you will hear every day in AmE, but using it would also not be unusual.

It's not uncommon in AmE as a main clause.  It isn't used much any more, however, as a tag ending [you'll be telling the truth from now on, I trust].
