Would "The roar of the ocean greeted me, as I slammed my hands over my ears.  A few seconds later, I had already drifted to my personal happy space, by envisioning earwax beaches and hairy palm trees." be considered an extended metaphor?  If not, how could I tweak it to make it one?

What you wrote isn't exactly a metaphor, but vivid and fanciful language.
An X is a Y is the formula for a typical metaphor.
