Is the semicolon correct?

My favorite meals include meat, potatoes, and gravy; a marriage of protein and starch.

It's a matter of style. I would prefer a dash, especially since there is no verb after the semicolon. Also, the comma after potatoes could be omitted.

in my view a comma between potatoes and gravy is wrong.
