Possibly Islam is a religion of peace but not the only one. I think Buddists have to be the most peaceful people around.

I also suppose it depends on how you define 'peace'. I'd include non-violence in that and Islam is not necessarily anti-violence. I'm sure most individuals involved in Islam are very peaceful though.

Fatwas - announcements of sentences of death on people - for example.

Sharia law seems rather blood-thirsty to me.

Big Smile [:D]Nona Fatwas aren't announcements of sentences of death on people. If you give fatwa you inform people on religious subjects e.g. last mont a fatwa was given here and the subject was how important women in Islam.

Sorry, Doll, you are right, fatwas are legal declarations of all types.

But how about this one? Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989 pronounced a death sentence on Salman Rushdie in a fatwa.

Also Sharia punishments such as

Nigeria's justice minister has condemned the decision of an Islamic court that a woman be stoned to death for adultery. Amina Lawal - the divorced woman who conceived a child outside marriage - lost her appeal against the sentence on Monday, sparking international criticism.

That's why I say Islam is not really non-violent.
