Please help me out.

I found the line below in the movie callded "Vanilla Sky".

'It was she who somehow knew you best'

Is that possible to say 'It was her'?

What's the intention of using 'she'?

'She' is subject.  'Her' is object.

She (subject) punched her (object).

It was she (subject) who knew you best. (She [subject] ... knew you best.)

I hope the above helps.

Hi, Liat.

When I get 'she' as a subject, It sounds fine to me.

Can I also use 'her' grammatically?

Or in this case, I shoudn't?

It is I (not 'me') who did it. (I did it.)

It was she (not 'her') who somehow knew you best. (She ... knew you best; 'her' cannot be used.)

But in reply to a question, "Who's that?" you can say, "It's her", although, strictly speaking, it should be "It's she."

'It was she who somehow knew you best'

she = subject complement. Strictly speaking, accusative case (her) is not justifiable here.

What's the intention of using 'she'? -- what is the purpose in using 'she'?

it has no referent; it only has a grammatical function

Thanks, Liat, Inchoateknowledge.

Both of your answers are really helpful to me.

I understand the purpose in using 'she'.

Best regards.

Hi,
I believe that quite a few people would say "It was her who knew you" or sentences like that.
"It was she who..." is what is considered grammatically correct though (and despite being the correct way I don't like such constructions at all, I don't know why).
Just my opinion though, Liveinjapan. Smile [:)]

If you don't have a sense of humor already, it's about time you buy one.

I believe you're saying that it doesn't sound nice to your ears. But English is such that sometimes what sounds wrong is correct and vice versa.

So what's "it" in this sentence?
