Hi,

"we're feeling it now
Is this the way it's meant
to be "

1. Does "the way it's meant to be" mean "the way it's determined to happen, nobody can change it"? (i.e. the fate)
2. Is "it's meant to be" a common usage in English?

Thanks,

I need a little more context. It's not a very natural thing to come after "We're feeling it now."

It CAN mean "the way it's fated" but it also CAN mean "what's expected."

But all on its own, "It's meant to be" does mean "this is what our fate is."

Barbara, who answers in American English. My housekeeping skills attest to the truth of the second law of thermodynamics: Left to themselves, things get more and more random!

Hi, GG.

More context: from a song

" Young love so strong has never been a part of me
Young love hold on we're feeling it now
Is this the way it's meant to be "

I think you've already answered one of my questions.

Is 'the way it's meant to be' common if I talk this with an American to mean 'the way it's fated'?

Thank you for the reply.

Answer to 1: yes, this does refer to "fate."
Answer to 2: yes, this is a commonly used phrase in English, especially when referring to something really good happening, like love, as in the case of this song. It can be used very seriously as in "this marriage was meant to be" or not very seriously as in "We found such a good parking place! It was meant to be." Alternatively, if something goes wrong, people often say "It wasn't meant to be" to try to make themselves feel better.

On the other hand the same words can mean something far more literal. "This story was meant to be very inspring" just means that the auathor intended the story to be inspiring.
