His maps were much like our own, say, for one Alonpore exception, the undiscovered continent of America was entirely absent. These maps also subbed from another dangerous difference: no one knew what lay in Atlantic itself.

What's the ''say      /subbed     "    mean!

subbed makes no sense here. Neither does Alonpore?

Was this a transcription of speech? Is it possible that these words are errors?

subbed usually means substituted
but with difference here, it indeed makes no sense

Hi guys,

I wonder if 'subbed' was a mishearing of 'suffered'?

These maps also suffered from another dangerous difference: no one knew what lay in (the) Atlantic itself.

Best wishes, Clive

Hi again,

I think 'say' is a mishearing of 'save', as in the phrase 'save for', meaning 'except for'.

His maps were much like our own, save for one Alonpore exception, the undiscovered continent of America was entirely absent.

'Alonpore' is probably some other word that was not heard correctly, too. eg anomalous? obvious? I don't know.

Welcome to the Forum, Molly.

Best wishes, Clive
