Okinawa, once the Ryukyu Kingdom, is Japan's southernmost
prefecture
. It has a long history and a unique culture that is quite different from the rest of Japan.
Hi,
Does "prefecture" in the above equal "county" or "province" to you? Thanks.

.
Prefecture
is the word accepted by English writers for Japanese '
ken / to / do / fu
'. For Americans, it is closer to 'state' and for Canadians it is similar to 'province'; I imagine that Brits will equate it with 'county'. South Korea is divided into nine
do
(provinces).
